How can you call the ship ..
One of the main “chips” of World of Warships will be the opportunity to go to sea on one of the “paper” ships – unrealized projects that have never been built. But to any ship, let even never existed, first you need to give a name. Today we will talk about how the “Payerships” World of Warships has gained their names.
“At first, we did not think that the search for a suitable name for the“ paper ”ship would be a serious problem,” says Gam Designer Pavel Kayun. -It is known that back at the beginning of the 20th century in most countries with naval forces, the basic principles of the names of ships were determined. For example, heavy Japanese cruisers bore the names of the mountains, and the lungs were called in honor of the rivers. Over time, we managed to explore all the rules of the name for each of the classes of the ships that will be presented in the release version of the World of Warships, and we set to select the names.
Wargaming projects are uniting millions of players around the world, and this imposes a great responsibility on the developers of the World of Warships. In the course of work on the “paper” ships, it was very important not to make a mistake with the choice of their names. To work with the names of “Payerships”, real connoisseurs of their business were involved – specialists of the studio in the Japanese language and history from the ART QA department.
At the very beginning, the team of gam https://nonukcasinosites.co.uk/casinos-not-on-gamstop designers offered them an extensive list of possible names, many of which did not go through the suitability and went to the scrap. For example, the examination did not have the name “Haku” proposed for the project of a Japanese linear cruiser. The Japanese call the “Hakusan” (“San” – one of the readings of the word “mountain”), and the word “hack” (“white”) without additional hieroglyph does not point to the mountain, in honor of which they wanted to name him. In addition, Haku is written by one hieroglyph, and the names of Japanese cruisers traditionally contained two or three hieroglyphic symbols. As a result, the Khaku cruiser was renamed Ivaki, since the name of this Hieroglyphs contains two hieroglyphs for Japanese synthoids and is ideal for all other criteria.
Faced with this, we realized the seriousness of the problem and decided to attract the best military experts working in the Wargaming regional offices to the issue, ”says Pavel Kayun.
The main task of the experts was not to come up with the name for ships, and, as before, to analyze very voluminous lists of names that the development team provided to them. For this, not only extensive knowledge of history and culture was needed, but also developed professional intuition.
“The idea to include in the process of people with the greatest professionalism justified themselves completely,” explains the historical consultant Sergey Gornostaev. – It is very important that the name of the ship not only suits him, but also provoke the right associations, and also be harmonious in the languages of countries where World of Warships can become a hit. Only a person born in Japan or America will be able to say for sure how to perceive the names of the “paper” ships Audience of the game ”.
The office of Wargaming in the United States from the list sent by colleagues selected 14 potential names. The rest of the names had to be excluded: all of them were either already used or did not fit the general concept. Almost immediately, without hesitation, the Stodder version was accepted – this is the surname of the famous commander of the USS Monitor ship, which was on the ship from the moment of its launch to the water during the Civil War in the United States and heroically helped save him. To check the rest, I needed to contact archival records. Traditionally, American destroyers wear the names of military personnel awarded the Medal of Honor. It was necessary to select those of them in honor of whom from 1928 to 1943 were not called ships. As a result, six names were included in the final list.
The situation with the Japanese ships that bore the names of the mountains turned out to be more complicated and confusing than it seemed at first glance. The mountain could give its name to the ship only if it had the necessary status and rank, which had absolutely nothing to do with its height. They were determined by several criteria: from religious and historical value to their symbolic meaning. In this difficult matter, the help of the famous expert on the Imperial Fleet Japan Masatosi Kodak, who took part in the selection and analysis of the names,. The lists of names tested by him were accepted into the work of the developers’ team and found their place in the game.
“Ultimately, all the“ Payerships ”of World of Warships gained their names,” summarizes Pavel Kayun. – Of course, we have many other questions left, but now it is clear that with the names of the ships we definitely did not miss. All experts in naval history will be able to evaluate this piece of our work in dignity “.
